Louie Lee, seven years old, has never attended a single day of school in his lifetime and is unable to read or write.
Michelle Cassemis, his mother, has been waiting years for a diagnosis of his particular educational requirements and behavioural concerns .According to WalesOnline, Michelle is "heartbroken" that her youngest child has been essentially refused the care he requires because no appropriate school has been identified for him. Michelle's elder children, ages 17 and 19, had no issues and went to the same primary school as their younger brother..
From Trowbridge, Cardiff, Michelle is continuing her troubles getting any treatment for her son, which has led in his not attending school due to his behavioural and anxiety issues. She explained: "Louie's time at school dramatically reduced from 90 minutes a day to just half an hour. His short schedule declined over the years since being in reception and we are still waiting to see someone for a proper diagnosis. The last 3 years has consisted me taking trips to the doctors being told it was just ADHD. There is more to it and time is precious for a child growing up in the education system".
Louie can only count to 20 which differs to all the children his age who are up to speed with their reading and writing. Michelle feels that her child is at a huge loss, as she remains a stay at home mother until the problem has been resolved and she can continue back to hairdressing.
Lockdown became the biggest hurdle for Louie as he became agitated with having no support or diagnosis at the difficult time. He would often get angry and suffer from anxiety which led to his attachment issues. It came to a point where Michelle turned to different parenting programmes which resulted in more frustration and a great distance from any support or solution for her son.
From Louies secondary school, St John Lloyd Primary, Michelle credited the headteacher for her amazing support and could "not say a bad word about her", even if she could not keep him in the school.
A representative for Cardiff Council commented on the situation: "Our focus is always responding to a Childs needs. Our educational programmes will always react to needs, regardless of condition."
