As a young student journalist studying at Birmingham City University, I can certainly say that I am studying from a wide range of modules. It may only be three but they all differ with their subject content. One of these modules even includes law! (and ethics) which is really interesting and jam packed to the point where it can be overwhelming. But hey...who said this was going to be easy? I like myself a challenge. Of course my lecturers did not lie when they said there is a lot of writing, but I can talk for England so I am more than happy to keep waffling (I am professional too don't worry). I thought that today, It's time I just sit back and reflect upon the skills I have built in our Live Newsroom module.
In the Live Newsroom module, I have developed a wider knowledge in social media and the relevance it has as a journalist. For example, twitter has never been of big use to me till I came to BCU. Now that I have familiarised myself, I am able to use a tweet deck. This has allowed me to find stories on the category of interest and will help me when writing future news stories. Other skills I have gained consist of a wide variety, these include: writing and creating content for an online blog, adding structure to my writing style when writing news articles, and learning the basic format on how to approach an interviewee and later conduct an interview. I have already learnt so much, yet there is still so much more to build upon in future semesters.
So there we are.. that's the last few weeks in a nutshell and to think I have actually picked skills up and applied it makes me feel nice and content. Now we have to think about work experience, which I absolutely love doing and have done in the past, so this should not be a problem for me! but before I go on, I must admit it has been a good journey.
I have chosen to embrace the world of journalism, in order to excel in my chosen career path, it is most important to have experience. Not only will this strengthen my skill set but it will also enhance my employability for future broadcasting companies. For a long while I have developed a strong passion for media which has increased my confidence for broadcast Journalism. I have aspirations to work in broadcasting companies whether it is on screen or radio. I feel I have built confidence to work in this field and I have always been determined to get myself out there where people can see and hear me. Previously I have been a newsroom assistant in a local radio station which allowed me to go on air. This is the type of experience I wish to advance upon and would be beneficial for my future CV and it is something I enjoy. Two main companies which I envisage myself working for is The BBC and SKY. From growing up as a child, these two broadcasting companies have always intrigued me and been a main source for news. It is most important how the media is portrayed in a true sense and how we can make a difference. Like any news outlet, BBC and Sky News can be distributed via radio news and online channels, they are also very well-known not only in The UK but also globally. I have kept a wide eye out for both of the companies and the academies that offer short- and long-term work placements which I have been keen to reach out to. If I had the opportunity to work for either of these companies, I would like to present and be broadcasted to viewers as I prefer to be on screen rather than the background as that is where my confidence has always taken me. I would also like to take part in interviewing as it is a skill I am already picking up upon in Live Newsroom. This will give me an opportunity to see if I can apply my recent skills to forefront companies. As most job roles start from somewhere, I would happily take smaller roles in order to build myself up.
