Student targeted in homophobic hate crime during Birmingham Pride remains 'positive and fabulous'

Raphael Kohn, a third-year medical student at the University of Birmingham, was verbally abused by an unknown man while he was returning from Pride. On Saturday, September 24, around 3:30 pm, the incident occurred at a bus stop on St. Martin's Queensway.

The individual yelled insults and threats at Raphael and gave off the impression that he was about to assault him. He seemed to be "drunk and disorderly" due to there not being any buses arriving.

Raphael was fortunate to have a few individuals standing by him to support him, intervene, and prevent any additional attacks. They then called the Police and later accompanied Raphael on his travels home to make sure he was safe.

As the Police arrived, the man shouting abuse had already disappeared. West Midlands Police posted an appeal for more information and provided this statement:

"We are investigating a hate crime, after a man was verbally abused during the Pride celebrations on Saturday, September 24. We will never accept or tolerate attacks on anyone simply for being who they are. Anyone with further information can contact us via Live Chat on our website quoting 20/828812/22.”

Since then, Raphael continues to express his gratitude to everyone that helped him:

"Every time I explain this incident, I feel it's necessary to mention how amazing the bystanders who came to my aid were. They blocked the way, prevented the man from approaching me, and truly stood up for me. I will always remember that as being a truly lovely thing." He said.

Despite this incident, Raphael maintains a positive attitude and is excited for the next Pride in Birmingham.

"I had a relatively minor experience, compared to what many others have been through. But it's these kinds of experiences that show why we need pride. The main thing is, it has made me even more determined to go back next year and have an absolutely incredible time. I will be there in style, you know, fabulously gay, really openly gay." He added.
